The alert is issued under the Special Plan for Civil Protection and Emergency Response for Forest Fires of the Autonomous Community of the Canary Islands (INFOCA), in anticipation of an episode of high temperatures lasting several days. The heat is expected to progressively intensify across the archipelago starting Wednesday, particularly affecting the eastern islands and spreading to the rest over the weekend.
Meteorological models indicate the arrival of a warm, dry air mass of African origin. Maximum temperatures are forecast to reach up to 38 ºC in inland areas of Gran Canaria, 33 ºC in the interior of Fuerteventura, and between 32 and 33 ºC in parts of the interior of Tenerife. The situation may extend to other islands.
This episode will be accompanied by a low thermal inversion and relative humidity below 30% above it. The prevailing wind will be from the northeast, with locally strong gusts, which, although a widespread strong wind episode is not anticipated, could influence the spread of forest fires. A slight intrusion of dust (calima) is expected, mainly over the eastern islands, without significant concentrations.
This meteorological configuration will progressively increase the risk of forest fires, especially between Friday and Saturday, when the episode is expected to become widespread. The situation will be under constant monitoring by the Directorate General of Emergencies.
