The Port Authority of Santa Cruz de Tenerife has closed access to the two Valleseco coal docks, located in the Chicharrero Port, after a technical inspection conducted in early April revealed significant structural deterioration.

The measure, taken for safety reasons, affects both the Cory Dock and the Playa de la Alemana Dock. According to the state body, relevant damage has been identified in essential elements for the stability of both infrastructures.

This restriction, adopted by prioritizing people's safety, will remain in place for as long as necessary until, after an in-depth report, existing alternatives are evaluated and the appropriate ones are applied.

The initial diagnosis, prepared by the Tenerife Ports Maintenance department, indicates the absence of fundamental support pieces for the solidity of the framework. In the case of the Cory Dock, technicians have detected the lack of at least two wooden beams on both sides, in addition to significant deterioration in the structural element to which they were attached.
Meanwhile, the Playa de la Alemana Dock has suffered the breakage of several steel ties installed in previous interventions and the detachment of wooden pieces from the deck. This deterioration has been exacerbated by recent episodes of strong waves.
The report highlights that both infrastructures are located in the tidal race zone, subjecting them to continuous cycles of humidity and drying due to variations in sea level. This circumstance is particularly unfavorable for the durability of the wood, the predominant material in their construction.
