May 1st, International Workers' Day, is an unchangeable national holiday in Spain, but in Tenerife, some businesses and essential services will remain open, especially in high tourist areas.

This day, dedicated to commemorating the global labor movement, is traditionally a day for social and labor demands. Being a national holiday, many take advantage of a long weekend, which reduces usual commercial activity.
However, the Ministry of Employment, Industry and Commerce of the Government of the Canary Islands, through an order from June 27, 2011, allows commercial establishments located in High Tourist Influx Zones to operate with complete freedom regarding opening hours. This means that, although most businesses will close, there will be options for residents and visitors.
In addition to essential service professionals such as healthcare workers, police, firefighters, and private security agents, other sectors will also be working. These include on-call pharmacies and those that advertise being open 365 days a year. Bakeries, including recent franchises and small establishments, will also open their doors, as will 24-hour stores, which usually maintain their regular hours.
The restaurant sector, including bars and cafes, will individually decide whether to open, taking advantage of the increased customer flow on holidays. Gas stations will also offer service, though not all of them, so it is advisable to check beforehand. As for shopping centers, those located in High Tourist Influx Zones, such as Siam Mall or Rosa Center in the south of the island, and Centro Comercial Martiánez in Puerto de la Cruz, will be operational. Supermarkets like TuTrébol, HiperDino, and SuperDino will also open in tourist areas, although HiperDino will keep most of its stores closed outside these areas.
It is advisable to check specific opening hours on each establishment's website, as a shopping center's opening does not guarantee that all its individual stores will be operational.
