The Santa Cruz de Tenerife City Council has confirmed that the central Calle Castillo will feature shade awnings along its entire length, from Plaza Weyler to Plaza de la Candelaria, after reaching an agreement with Cabildo Heritage.

The councilor for Public Services of the Santa Cruz de Tenerife City Council has announced that, following negotiations with Cabildo Heritage, authorization has been secured to install shade canopies along the entire Calle Castillo. This measure will cover the entirety of the important commercial thoroughfare in the capital of Tenerife.

Initially, the Cabildo's permit only allowed for the installation of artificial shade in the Valentín Sanz section. However, subsequent efforts have enabled the project to be extended to the entire street, thus fulfilling a long-standing demand from merchants and citizens.
To implement this initiative, the capital's City Council will need to draft a new project. The Local Government Board is expected to approve the tender for the preparation of this document next Monday, April 20. The successful bidder will have ten months to complete it. Construction for the installation of the “shade sails” is anticipated to begin in the second half of next year.
This project, approved within the framework of the Municipal Participatory Budgets in 2020, had faced obstacles from the Historical Heritage of the Cabildo de Tenerife. The recent negotiation has unblocked the situation, allowing the execution to proceed as initially planned.
Additionally, the first deputy mayor has mentioned the intention to develop a proposal to renovate the paving of Calle Castillo before the end of the term, given the need for improvement. Although tree planting had been considered, the installation of shade canopies along the entire street makes this option no longer a priority, although some type of vegetation is not ruled out.
