The Canary Health Service (SCS) is developing a Cancer Care Strategy aimed at ensuring equitable access to prevention, treatment, research, and palliative care. This was explained by the Director of the SCS, Adasat Goya, during his participation in the ‘I Integrative Oncology Fair: health, prevention, and support in cancer. Renacer Tenerife 2026’, held at the Tenerife Exhibition Centre.
At the event, which addressed aspects related to health, treatments, cancer therapies, and the well-being of oncological patients, Goya thanked the organizers and emphasized the SCS's work in creating comprehensive care. He noted that significant progress has been made in cancer care over the past two years, both in terms of equipment and home assistance.
Public hospitals in the Canary Islands are equipped with high-tech, more precise, and less toxic equipment. Key investments for the future are underway, such as the incorporation of cyclotrons, which produce the necessary isotopes for PET scans, thereby eliminating dependence on the mainland for their supply. In this regard, an investment of forty million euros has been made to equip both provinces with cyclotrons and their associated laboratories.
Furthermore, Goya acknowledged the involvement of Primary Care and Oncology services in implementing home-based Palliative Care in Tenerife and Fuerteventura, the only health areas that previously lacked this service, which is now operational. In Tenerife, the care model was modified to enhance palliative care by establishing services at the HUC and the Hospital del Sur, and home care was implemented in coordination with the Primary Care Management and both hospitals.
“At the SCS, we have excellent professionals who form multidisciplinary teams where oncology, nursing, pharmacy, primary care, and palliative care, among others, work in a coordinated manner,” stated the SCS Director.
Adasat Goya concluded that addressing cancer requires a strategy, currently in development, that guarantees equity in access to prevention, treatment, research, and palliative care.
