Laura Daniela Puerto Osorio, a student from CIFP Virgen de Candelaria in Tenerife, has been honored with the Medal of Excellence at WorldSkills Shanghai 2026. This award recognizes participants who score over seven hundred points, demonstrating a high level of professional performance according to international standards. She achieved 725 points, securing fifth place and narrowly missing the bronze medal.
The competition, held in Shanghai, saw China take gold, followed by Singapore with silver, and Indonesia and Denmark sharing bronze. Laura, alongside representatives from Hungary and Sweden, led the group of participants awarded the Medal of Excellence.
The Canarian student qualified for Shanghai after winning the gold medal at SpainSkills 2026, representing the CIFP Virgen de las Nieves in La Palma. Her preparation was overseen by her tutor, Vanesa Cabezas Pérez.
The Canarian participation was rounded out by Matías Alejo Segovia Mitrovich, a student from IES Geneto in Tenerife, who competed in Carpentry. Matías, also a national champion at SpainSkills 2026, scored 650 points after four days of competition, measuring his skills against twenty other young professionals worldwide.
The 48th edition of WorldSkills brought together over 1,400 young people from more than seventy countries across 64 professional specializations. The Spanish delegation, comprising 34 competitors, achieved its best historical performance, securing one bronze medal and five Medals of Excellence, including Laura's.
In addition to Laura, the Spanish team won a bronze medal in Fashion Technology and four Medals of Excellence in Cooking, Network Systems Administration, Automobile Technology, and Electrical Installations.
