The Canary Islands' regional executive has decided not to get drawn into the national political debate surrounding a potential no-confidence motion against President Pedro Sánchez. Instead, the Canarian administration is concentrating on its own pending files and transfers with the State, as well as negotiations on airport management and the defense of the Economic and Fiscal Regime (REF).
The Canarian government's strategy is twofold: maintaining political distance from the national fray and exerting maximum institutional pressure on matters concerning the islands. Despite calling for President Sánchez to face a confidence vote or call early elections, the Canary Islands are prioritizing their agenda, viewing June as a crucial month to gauge the State's willingness to respond to their demands.
“"We will indeed take advantage of every last minute and every loophole to move forward with all the matters that the Canary Islands have pending with the State throughout the month of June."
The Executive's spokesperson, Alfonso Cabello, confirmed after the Governing Council meeting that the priority is to advance pending files, some of which are progressing satisfactorily. Open communication is being maintained with the various ministries, ensuring that the Archipelago's institutional agenda will not be halted by state political uncertainty.
A central point on the agenda is the negotiation regarding participation in airport management. The Canary Islands government is awaiting formal documentation from the Secretariat of State for Public Administrations concerning the bilateral agreement. The executive believes that the Statute of Autonomy allows for going beyond the agreement reached with the Basque Country regarding decision-making power over airport taxes.
Additionally, the need for a meeting with the Minister of Finance to discuss the REF has been highlighted. Cabello also emphasized the government's concern over the 350 million euros that the State owes the Canary Islands for the current year, an economic claim that adds to the list of pending issues.
