The CCOO union marched through several streets of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria this Thursday, protesting for improved labor conditions across the archipelago. The demonstration was attended by the general secretary of CCOO, Unai Sordo.
Sordo urged administrations to ensure that the macroeconomic growth experienced by Spain benefits the households of the country's working class. "This is achieved through wages, fighting for collective agreements, and implementing much more effective and ambitious housing policies," he stated.
But this is only one part of the picture
The union leader acknowledged that official figures show record economic growth in Spain, with historically high employment, increased indefinite contracts, and rising average wages. However, he stressed that this represents only one facet of the reality.
Sordo emphasized that precarious work, low-quality, and poorly paid jobs remain prevalent. He highlighted that 9.5 million people, despite working and even receiving salary increases, struggle to make ends meet due to the rising costs, particularly for essential goods and housing.
The union identifies housing as the primary demand of the moment, asserting that "macroeconomic growth must translate to all households of our country's working class." Sordo added that it is "unacceptable" for housing prices to be "skyrocketing" and that CCOO "will not resign itself to this scenario."
Finally, the general secretary of CCOO called for a fight for "collective agreements" and urged administrations to be "much braver in containing housing prices, which are absolutely abusive."
