CD Tenerife on the Verge of a Historic and Rare Promotion

The 'blanquiazul' team is close to achieving direct promotion to Segunda División as group champions, a feat only accomplished once since the creation of Primera RFEF.

CD Tenerife is about to conclude an exceptional season, with the possibility of direct promotion to Segunda División as Primera RFEF group champions, a milestone that, since the creation of this category in the 2021/22 season, has only been achieved on one previous occasion.

Relegation from Segunda División and achieving promotion in the first attempt, especially as group champions, might seem like a normal outcome for teams that, like CD Tenerife in the 24/25 season, drop from LaLiga Hypermotion and enter the new competition as clear favorites for promotion. However, this situation is quite unusual in the recent history of the category.
In fact, since the creation of Primera RFEF in the 2021/22 campaign, there is only one precedent of a team that managed to return to the higher division quickly: Amorebieta. The club from Vizcaya, currently competing in Segunda RFEF, debuted in the silver category in the 21/22 season and, after being relegated to Primera RFEF, managed to return to LaLiga Hypermotion by being the best in Group 2 in the 22/23 season, tied on points with Eldense.
All indications suggest that CD Tenerife will follow the same path as Amorebieta. Even Eldense, who shared the relegation with the 'blanquiazules', is also fighting for the top spot in Group 2. Other teams that achieved promotion within a year, such as Albacete, Alcorcón, Málaga, and Andorra, had to do so through the promotion playoffs.
CD Tenerife could mathematically secure promotion as champions this Saturday at El Toralín, if Celta Fortuna loses earlier against Pontevedra and the 'blanquiazules' defeat Ponferradina. Otherwise, the team will have more opportunities, with the next one being on Friday, May 1st, at the Heliodoro Rodríguez López against Barakaldo. The nine-point advantage and goal difference over their closest pursuer, Celta Fortuna, significantly eases the situation in the final stretch of the season.
