Organizations such as Greenpeace and the Asociación Tinerfeña de Amigos de la Naturaleza (ATAN), members of Salvar Punta Blanca, have warned the president that the decision regarding the theme park rests with the Cabildo, which can withdraw the consideration of insular interest and, in accordance with the law, allow the project to fail.
The Underwater Gardens project plans to occupy 10.6 hectares in the municipality of Guía de Isora, on the southwest coast of Tenerife. This area is one of the few that has not yet been exploited for tourism. The plan includes the creation of underwater spaces with marine flora, located in the maritime strip of the Special Conservation Zone (ZEC) Teno-Rasca, which houses the only whale sanctuary in the European Union.
Following a meeting of the Cabildo's governing council, the president argued that the declaration of insular interest was approved by the previous government team, led by the PSOE, and that the current corporation neither defends nor promotes the initiative, as it is a private project. However, although the process began during the PSOE's mandate, the final approval of the declaration of insular interest, an essential requirement for building on rural land, occurred in 2024 under the current leadership.
“"The decision is solely in the hands of the Cabildo president. Withdrawing the insular interest is the only way to demonstrate that the Cabildo is not a promoter's defender. Words without actions do not protect Punta Blanca or the seas. Punta Blanca is not to be touched."
The platform argues that the declaration of insular interest was justified in 2022 by the urgency of the coronavirus pandemic and its impact on tourism. However, they point out that currently the number of visitors to the Canary Islands exceeds pre-pandemic records, which, in their opinion, invalidates the legal justification for the project. Without this declaration, the terrestrial part of the project would collapse, and without it, the marine part, processed as scientific research, would lose its support.
