The Government of the Canary Islands has approved a subsidy of two million euros intended for the dioceses of Canarias and Nivariense to help cover the expenses related to the upcoming visit of Pope Leo XIV to the islands.

The Governing Council of the Canary Islands has greenlit the disbursement of two million euros as a subsidy to the region's dioceses. The Diocese of Canarias (Las Palmas province) will receive one million euros, while the Nivariense Diocese (Santa Cruz de Tenerife province) will receive the other million. The purpose of this financial aid is to contribute to covering the organizational expenses for the trip of Pope Leo XIV, whose visit to Gran Canaria and Tenerife is scheduled for June 11 and 12. In Tenerife's case, the stay will be brief, lasting only six hours.
The regional government's spokesperson, Alfonso Cabello, explained that this contribution from the regional Executive aims to support the organization of events planned during the two days His Holiness will spend on the islands. "The regional Executive thus contributes financially to the organization of the events that His Holiness plans to carry out on both islands during these two historic days," Cabello stated this Monday after the Governing Council meeting.
This governmental contribution is in addition to funds previously announced by the island councils. Both the Gran Canaria and Tenerife Island Councils had previously committed one million euros each, bringing the total public funding for the papal visit to three million euros.
Cabello also highlighted the active collaboration of the Canary Islands Government since the visit was confirmed. "Since the Pope's visit was confirmed, the Government of the Canary Islands has made itself available to the dioceses to ensure full support for whatever they requested regarding organization and to collaborate in all necessary aspects," he affirmed.
