The Doctor Negrín Hospital in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria has inaugurated a renovated oncology day hospital, expanding its facilities to offer greater comfort and privacy to cancer patients.

The hospital has completed a renovation costing 405,640 euros, resulting in a larger space with two additional treatment stations, a new waiting room, and three more medical consultations. The Day Hospital now features a total of four beds and 21 recliners, nine of which are extendable, a central island for treatment preparation, two waiting rooms, a treatment room, and eleven medical consultations, along with two for nursing and one for pharmacy.
Hospital manager Miguel Ángel Ponce highlighted the unit's evolution, which previously shared space with hematology patients until three years ago. Following an initial separation in October 2023, this renovation creates an oncology Day Hospital that is "more comfortable and with more treatment stations." A key innovation is the integration of a pharmacy room for better collaboration between pharmacists, nurses, and doctors. The space has been "humanized" with more light, new equipment, recliners, and screens, enhancing privacy and comfort for patients with such a sensitive condition.
The reorganization of the space, featuring an island-style workspace, allows for better patient visibility and work optimization. Ponce stated that the facilities are "much more modern and aligned with the increase in oncological demand," which has grown by 13% in consultations over the last two years, reaching approximately 35,000 annual consultations.
The Minister of Health, Esther Monzón, added that the Day Hospital administers around 16,000 oncological treatments annually, with a 3% annual increase in activity, making the restructuring necessary. She emphasized that despite the rising incidence of cancer, survival rates are improving due to treatment innovation. She also mentioned the upcoming advanced therapies building, currently under construction, which will include a cyclotron and a proton therapy unit.
The renovation was an organizational challenge that involved the dedication of the entire Oncology Day Hospital team, as well as other hospital services. The Oncology Day Hospital operates Monday to Friday, from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM, for outpatient treatments and care.
