In an unexpected gesture of closeness, Pope Leo XIV commenced his address in French, the language of many arriving on the Canary Islands' coasts. The Pontiff expressed his wish for the testimony of humanity that migrants have brought to the Canary Islands to be valued.
The Pope highlighted the name of the reception center, 'Las Raíces' (The Roots), and recalled the words of his predecessor, Pope Francis, who often used the image of roots to emphasize the importance of remembering one's origins, staying united, and trusting in the Lord.
“"Dear brothers, we are all migrants. I carry you in my heart, dear friends."
The Supreme Pontiff underscored the need to maintain connection with one's origins and faith, a message that resonated with those present at the reception center.
