Spanish passengers aboard the MV Hondius cruise ship, affected by a hantavirus outbreak, have been evacuated from the Port of Granadilla de Abona, in Tenerife, and transferred to Tenerife South Airport by the Military Emergency Unit (UME) for their onward flight to Madrid.

The transfer operation commenced around 10:00 AM this Sunday, as the first UME bus departed from the pier with the initial five travelers. These passengers were brought to the pier in a medium-sized vessel, differing from the initially planned zodiac, and directly boarded the 'bubble vehicle' that transported them to Tenerife South Airport - Reina Sofía.
At the airport, the evacuees will bypass standard controls and contact with other travelers, proceeding directly to the tarmac where an aircraft awaits to transport them to Gómez Ulla Hospital in Madrid. Some of them documented the moment with their mobile phones, amidst the presence of numerous international media covering the event.
The MV Hondius vessel anchored off the coast of Tenerife in the early hours of Sunday, shortly before 6:00 AM. Initially, the ship's access door faced the pier, allowing healthcare personnel, equipped with PPE, to enter and check the passengers' condition. However, after confirmation that the situation remained stable, the vessel turned, obscuring the door from view of the port.
The disembarkation took place with the ship's stern facing the media, limiting visible details. Passengers were transferred in a smaller boat to the facilities set up on the pier, from where they proceeded directly to the UME vehicles without intermediate stops.
