The Technical Inspection of Vehicles is an essential procedure to ensure that cars driving on the roads of Tenerife and the rest of the country meet safety and emission standards. However, regulations provide grace periods for newly registered units.
Passenger cars and motorcycles have a four-year period from their first registration before attending their first inspection. Mopeds have three years, while trucks and trailers up to 3,500 kilos must pass it after two years. For caravans over 750 kilos, the period extends to six years.
Regarding classic vehicles, the new Historic Vehicle Regulation allows those over 60 years old to be exempt from periodic inspection, provided they have the corresponding official classification. Despite this exemption, owners are advised to perform preventive checks to ensure the proper functioning of safety elements.
For the rest of the vehicle fleet, the inspection remains a mandatory procedure. The absence of the V-19 badge on the windshield carries penalties, as does driving with an expired or unfavorable inspection, which can lead to fines of up to 500 euros and vehicle immobilization.
