The Spanish Government is preparing for Leo XIV's visit in June, hoping the pontiff will publicly endorse its policies on peace, migrant regularization, and the management of the hantavirus health crisis.

Moncloa views the upcoming visit of Leo XIV to Spain, scheduled for June, as a politically significant event. The pontiff's address to the Congress of Deputies is expected to strengthen the government's agenda in defending multilateralism and peace, as well as national issues such as migrant regularization.
In recent weeks, the Government has sought to align its discourse with that of the Pope on ideologically contentious issues. Regarding the management of the hantavirus emergency, the head of the Executive has repeatedly cited the pontiff's messages to counter opposition criticism and institutional clashes with the Canarian Government.

"We will not enter into any institutional controversy. I stand by the Pope's words expressing his recognition and gratitude to Canarian society, which has set an example of solidarity and empathy."

This statement followed the Pope's gratitude for the welcome extended by the people of the Canary Islands, allowing the cruise ship Hondius with hantavirus-affected individuals to dock. Regarding migrant regularization, socialist sources interpret the Pope's visit to the Canary Islands as a message in itself, also expecting a reference in his speech to Congress, in front of parliamentary groups that oppose this measure.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs had previously indicated that the Vatican considered the migrant regularization initiative by the Government to be “positive,” a support also expressed by the Spanish Church. Furthermore, the Government seeks to align with the Pope in his “no to war” stance against figures like Donald Trump, highlighting the pontiff's message in defense of peace and human rights.
The papal visit's stops in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and Santa Cruz de Tenerife are seen by the Government as an opportunity to project a message of solidarity, rejection of criminalization, and defense of migrant dignity. This visit also marks a legislative term of agreements between the Government and the Church, including the unblocking of issues such as the re-signification of the Valley of Cuelgamuros and compensation for victims of pedophilia, thanks to Vatican mediation.
