During the plenary session held on Thursday, April 9, La Laguna City Council approved a proposal from Drago Verdes Canarias to establish limitations on access for private tourist vehicles, including rental cars, within the Anaga Rural Park. The measure also includes parking restrictions in the Cruz del Carmen area.
The approved motion emphasizes the importance of enhancing collective public transport to improve mobility in the area and requests the Island Council to publish the mobility study for Anaga. This initiative marks the third presented by Drago Verdes Canarias during the current legislative term, following an initial rejection in March 2024 and a subsequent approval in May 2025, whose agreements have yet to be implemented.
“"This is the second time the Plenary has approved a motion with this content, but we still see no progress in its implementation. We will continue to push to reduce tourist pressure on Anaga."
During her speech, the councillor for Drago Verdes Canarias, who proposed the motion, highlighted recent mobilizations by residents of the Rural Park. She stated that they are at their limit due to the saturation of services and infrastructure by tourists. She also reiterated the institutions' obligation to guarantee access and enjoyment of natural spaces for Canarian citizens, even if it means establishing limitations for visitors.
The current motion reaffirms previous agreements adopted by the Municipal Plenary in May 2025. These include advancing a study on mobility in Anaga, initiated in November 2024, urging the Cabildo de Tenerife and the city councils of La Laguna, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, and Tegueste to take measures to improve sustainable mobility, and studying specific restrictions for tourism companies using public transport with their clients.
Furthermore, the administrations are urged to facilitate the use of public transport within the park and to create a pluralistic working group to update the Anaga Rural Park Management and Use Master Plan (PRUG), involving citizen participation, the University of La Laguna, and political groups. Finally, the Cabildo de Tenerife and the Government of Canarias are requested to install mechanisms to limit access for private tourist vehicles, such as rental cars, VTCs, and quad and buggy excursions, by establishing a daily maximum quota.
