The Spanish capital, Madrid, is preparing to face "very difficult days" between June 6th and 9th due to preparations for the visit of Pope Leo XIV, which will involve significant mobility disruptions.

The city of Madrid is bracing for a week of considerable mobility challenges caused by the preparations for the imminent arrival of Pope Leo XIV. Authorities are warning of "very difficult days" with notable disruptions on the capital's main traffic arteries.
Traffic jams are expected, particularly around Cibeles, Plaza de Lima, La Castellana, and Paseo del Prado. On the latter, one lane northbound has already been occupied, and a complete closure of the Cibeles axis is planned for June 4th. Plaza de Lima will have its central lanes closed starting this Monday, with a full closure on June 3rd. Special measures will also be in place at Lucero and the Movistar Arena, along with occasional road closures during the Pope's and official delegations' movements.
The Madrid City Council recommends avoiding unnecessary travel, encouraging teleworking, and implementing flexible hours. The M-30 ring road is positioned as the primary alternative for private vehicles, alongside other routes such as Bravo Murillo and Serrano. The council is collaborating with platforms like Google and Waze to provide real-time updates on closures.
Public transport will be the preferred option. EMT buses will be free between June 3rd and 9th, with a 25% fleet reinforcement. The taxi fleet will also operate without weekly rest days. Parking areas for visitor buses will be set up at locations like Ifema and Valdebebas, connected by public transport to the city center.
