The image of Mary Help of Christians returns to the streets of the El Toscal neighborhood this Saturday, after more than half a century of absence, reviving a deeply rooted tradition in collective memory.

The El Toscal neighborhood in Santa Cruz de Tenerife relives this Saturday a scene that evokes older generations: the return of the Mary Help of Christians procession to the streets after more than fifty years. The event promises to be a moment filled with emotion, memories, and neighborhood reunions, especially for the thousands of students who have passed through the Salesian center.
The Salesian educational community of the Hogar Escuela María Auxiliadora College is reviving this tradition, which disappeared in 1974. The day will begin with a Eucharist at 7:00 PM in the college courtyard. After the mass, the image will process through the streets of San Juan Bautista, San Martín, Santiago, San Isidro, La Rosa, and Hogar Escuela.
The idea of reviving the procession had been brewing for years among former students and members of the Salesian family. The pedagogical director of the center, Javier García, stated that the initiative stems from the "desire to recover something that the neighborhood fondly remembered," without needing a specific anniversary, but rather to bring back to the streets a tradition that many former students recall from their childhood.
The procession, which had not been held for 52 years, has a strong intergenerational component. Families will reunite around a devotion linked to the sentimental history of the neighborhood. The route will also serve as a symbolic inauguration of the renovated La Rosa street.
The Santa Cruz de Tenerife City Council, through the Centro-Ifara district, is collaborating in these events. The mayor, José Manuel Bermúdez, highlighted that recovering this processional outing means "reconnecting with a part of the emotional history of El Toscal and many families in Santa Cruz."
The devotion to Mary Help of Christians, patron saint of La Rosa, remains alive in the neighborhood. The procession also commemorates the social work of CajaCanarias, which enabled the establishment of the Hogar Escuela, providing care for orphaned girls during the dictatorship. The Salesian center, with over 750 students, will gather for this event.
On Sunday, the devotion will continue in Duggi square with neighborhood activities and the procession of the parish of Mary Help of Christians of Duggi.
