The title of the show, 'Balada de Sabanda', comes from a beautiful song dedicated to Los Sabandeños by Néstor Álamo, which narrates the group's origins in the Sabanda estate, in Punta del Hidalgo. This piece opens the concert, setting the tone for an evening of deep connection with Canarian musical tradition.
The idea for this collaboration arose after a successful encounter at one of Mestisay's concerts. The management of both groups, seeing the great reception, decided to transform that experience into a full show. The repertoire was reviewed and expanded, creating a scenic script that intertwines the songs logically, without spoken text, allowing the music to tell the story.
“"We always knew we would never give up making roots music. We don't exactly make folklore, but all our music is linked to roots music. That's what defines us and what protects us, even against an industry that often goes in another direction."
The show stands out for the interaction between members of both groups, sharing anecdotes and reflections on their careers and the evolution of Canarian music. Themes such as the encounter with South American music and local tradition are explored, with emotional moments where Los Sabandeños perform songs by Mestisay and vice versa, bringing new perspectives to well-known themes.
With approximately 30 musicians on stage, coordination is key. The vast experience of both ensembles ensures fluidity in the performance, where each song follows seamlessly, creating an energetic and cohesive experience for the audience. Roots music, though deeply traditional, is shown to be constantly evolving, incorporating contemporary elements without losing its essence.
