Weather conditions have marked the start of a significant day in Tenerife. Early images on Friday show thick layers of fog at Tenerife North-Ciudad de La Laguna Airport and in the upper area of the municipality of El Rosario, directly affecting the vicinity of the Las Raíces camp.
At the latter location, Pope Leo XIV is scheduled to hold a meeting and official greeting with the 753 migrants hosted at this emergency humanitarian facility. The area around the barracks awoke covered by the low cloud cover characteristic of the region, creating a cool and humid setting for the start of official events.
According to the official forecast from the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet), the strong winds from previous days are expected to ease somewhat in the Canary Islands this Friday. On the island of Tenerife, winds will blow between light and moderate from the north, with sea breezes predominating on the southwest-facing coasts. In the highlands, moderate southwesterly winds are expected, with occasional strong gusts in exposed high altitudes of El Teide.
The cloud cover affecting the north of the island is situated below 500-700 meters in altitude, with a clear tendency for wide clearings to open up from the morning onwards. However, the weather evolution will present a picture of notable contrasts across the entire island territory.
Regarding temperatures, little change is expected in coastal areas, with maximums of 27 degrees Celsius in Santa Cruz de Tenerife and minimums of 18. Nevertheless, in inland areas, a slight rise is anticipated, potentially reaching locally moderate levels in the highlands. In fact, Aemet indicates that reaching 30 degrees Celsius in inland areas facing the southern slopes of the island cannot be ruled out. Alongside this temperature increase, the meteorological forecast introduces a factor of instability for the latter half of the day. Weak, scattered, and occasional light rain is not ruled out in parts of inland Tenerife from midday onwards. These isolated showers will be accompanied by intervals of medium and high clouds, coexisting with the mostly clear skies that will prevail in the rest of the Archipelago's latitudes.
Finally, maritime conditions in the waters of the Canary Islands will maintain north or northeast winds with a force of 3 to 5. Moderate to rough seas are expected, accompanied by a northerly or northeasterly swell with waves ranging between 1 and 2 meters in height, while calm seas will be concentrated on the southwest coasts.
