The visit of Pope Leo XIV to Spain, scheduled from June 6 to 12, will commence with a youth vigil near the Santiago Bernabéu stadium in Madrid. This event, confirmed by the organizers, will take place at 8:00 PM in Plaza de Lima and its surrounding areas. Prior to this, the Pontiff will tour the area in the popemobile to greet pilgrims, concluding with a speech and Eucharistic Adoration.
The following day, the Pope will preside over a mass in Madrid's Plaza de Cibeles, followed by a Eucharistic procession. The other major multitudinous celebration on his itinerary will be held at the port of Santa Cruz de Tenerife on June 12, serving as the grand finale of his stay in the country.
On Monday, June 8, the Pope's agenda in Madrid will include a session in the Congress, where he will address parliamentarians. This marks the first time a Pope, in his capacity as head of State, will deliver a speech in a solemn session before Spanish representatives. The protocol will be that reserved for visits by heads of State, featuring a speech by the President of the Congress, Francina Armengol, and the signing of the book of honor.
In Barcelona, the Pope will visit the Abbey of Montserrat and the Sagrada Familia. This part of the visit will commemorate the centenary of Antonio Gaudí's death and inaugurate the Tower of Jesus, the tallest in the basilica and the highest among Christian churches.
The final stage in the Canary Islands will be divided between Tenerife and Gran Canaria. As highlighted by 'Vatican News', this trip was already in the heart of Pope Francis, as mentioned in January by the Cardinal Archbishop of Madrid, José Cobo Cano, referring to Pope Francis's desire to visit the islands amidst the migratory crisis.
Preparations for this visit have been ongoing for months, even over a year due to the change in Pontiff. The visit of the President of the Generalitat de Cataluña, Salvador Illa, to the Vatican in October 2025 was crucial in making the papal presence at the Sagrada Familia a reality. Illa was the first Spanish leader to meet with the Pope after his election in May 2025, following the passing of Pope Francis.
