Seismic activity increases around Las Cañadas del Teide

IGN and Involcan record hundreds of new micro-earthquakes in the southwest of the island of Tenerife.

Seismic activity in the southwest sector of Las Cañadas del Teide has experienced a new increase during the early hours of this Friday, with hundreds of events recorded by scientific agencies.

Following a brief decrease in intensity on Thursday afternoon, the National Geographic Institute (IGN) monitoring network detected a reactivation of the phenomenon starting at 3:00 AM. This episode, which began on Wednesday night, has now accumulated over a thousand seismic events in the area.
The tremors are located beneath the municipalities of Guía de Isora, Vilaflor de Chasna, and Santiago del Teide. Technical analysis indicates these are volcano-tectonic and hybrid events occurring at depths between 10 and 15 kilometers below sea level.
Meanwhile, the Canary Islands Volcanological Institute (Involcan) has recorded nearly 2,000 hybrid seismic events since the process began. The primary hypothesis suggests the injection of magmatic hydrothermal fluids, a recurring process within the Tenerife volcanic system since 2016.
