The Physiotherapy Service at the Nuestra Señora de Candelaria University Hospital, affiliated with the Canary Islands Government's Ministry of Health, carries out approximately 95,000 treatment sessions per year.

These sessions focus on addressing conditions that affect patients' mobility, functional capacity, and autonomy, covering both outpatient and inpatient care. The service is integrated into multidisciplinary teams for the treatment of adults and pediatric patients with various pathologies.
The hospital complex employs 64 physiotherapists distributed across twelve specialized units. Their work encompasses areas such as Neuro-Rehabilitation, musculoskeletal pathology, pelvic floor physiotherapy, Lymphedema, Early Attention, Pediatric Physiotherapy, and physiotherapy for amputee patients, among others.
Eighty percent of patients treated at the La Candelaria Hospital's Physiotherapy service present with traumatological issues, while the remaining twenty percent are treated for neurological injuries.
Physiotherapy intervention begins with an individualized assessment to establish treatment goals, utilizing techniques such as electrotherapy and functional capacity tests. In the traumatological field, the aim is to restore mobility and strength after injuries or surgeries, while in neurological cases, the focus is on regaining motor control, balance, and gait.
For patients who have suffered a stroke, physiotherapy is crucial for rehabilitation, aimed at recovering affected abilities and preventing complications. In pediatric patients, it contributes to motor development and the child's participation in their environment.
Therapeutic exercise is a transversal tool, prescribed individually to improve physical and functional capabilities and combat sedentary lifestyles associated with many conditions. Physiotherapists also educate patients and their families on self-care strategies and exercise guidelines to facilitate continuity of care at home.
On the occasion of World Physiotherapy Day, the Nuestra Señora de Candelaria University Hospital highlights the work of these professionals in patient recovery, maintenance of functional capacity, prevention of complications, and improvement of their autonomy and quality of life.
