The popular television contest is expanding its participation criteria, now accepting towns with populations between 3,000 and 10,000 inhabitants, which has increased the number of applications. Out of 1,034 invited towns, 83 advanced to the next stage, with 12 ultimately being selected.
The list of selected municipalities for the 2026 edition includes locations from various autonomous communities such as Valencia, Andalusia, Murcia, Castilla y León, Galicia, Catalonia, La Rioja, Asturias, Castilla-La Mancha, Community of Madrid, Basque Country, and the Canary Islands.
The selection of San Juan de la Rambla marks the return of Tenerife to the competition, following in the footsteps of other Canarian municipalities that have participated previously. The Canarian presence gains special significance after the victory of San Sebastián de La Gomera in the 2025 edition, the archipelago's first triumph in the format's recent history.
Historically, other Canarian towns such as Buenavista del Norte (Tenerife, 2005), Antigua (Fuerteventura, 2003), Agache-Güímar (Tenerife, 2001), Firgas (Gran Canaria, 1998), Pájara (Fuerteventura, 1997), El Sauzal (Tenerife, 1996), and Haría (Lanzarote, 1995) have also been part of the program.
