The final day of the "Vigías del Fuego" project, which has involved scout youths from across the island over recent months, took place on Saturday, May 23rd, at the San Matías II Civic Center. The initiative, coordinated by the organization Fénix Canarias with the collaboration of Fundación “la Caixa” through CaixaBank, aimed to raise awareness about forest fire prevention and the conservation of the Canary Islands' forest ecosystems.
Throughout the project, dozens of young people participated in educational talks on the archipelago's forest ecosystems, interpretive routes through areas affected by the major Tenerife forest fire of 2023, and educational activities designed to understand the impact of fire and its management.
The closing event featured a practical demonstration of forest fire behavior and various preventive forest management tools using scale models. These representations didactically illustrate how factors such as vegetation, wind, and preventive actions influence fire propagation.
The main objective of the program has been to bring the reality of forest fires in the Canary Islands closer to young people, fostering a culture of prevention, knowledge of the territory, and active participation in environmental conservation.
"Vigías del Fuego" thus concludes an edition marked by practical learning, environmental awareness, and collective commitment to defending the Canary Islands' forests against the risk of forest fires.
