The Tenants' Union of Tenerife has called for a demonstration on the upcoming June 27th in San Cristóbal de La Laguna, protesting against real estate speculation and the housing crisis in the Canary Islands.

The collective aims to highlight the impact of the housing crisis and speculative practices that, they claim, particularly affect municipalities like La Laguna and Santa Cruz de Tenerife. They assert that the increasing cost of renting and buying homes is progressively displacing residents and working families from the island.
This mobilization is part of over 20 protests organized across Spain under the slogan “housing costs us our lives,” scheduled between May 24th and June 28th.
The union criticizes that, despite the declaration of a housing emergency in the Canary Islands over two years ago with Decree-Law 1/2024, the situation “has not improved at all.” They demand a profound change in the housing market model, beyond mere declarations or palliative measures, to ensure the residence and permanence of the Canarian working class.
Key demands include the immediate declaration of stressed areas to cap rental prices, the implementation of effective policies to recover empty housing, especially from large holders, and a ban on the purchase of second homes by speculative capital, including foreign investment. They also call for the expansion of the public housing stock.
San Cristóbal de La Laguna was chosen as the protest location because it symbolizes the impact of the housing emergency. Recent data indicates that the municipality has seen the highest year-on-year increase in housing prices in the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, with a 15.6% rise.
Rental pressure is high, with a significant disparity between residential rental properties and vacation homes in La Laguna's town center. The union points out that speculation and 'turistification' are driving residents and working families out of their own municipalities.
Other organizations, such as Derecho al Techo in Gran Canaria and the Tenants' Union of Fuerteventura, are also preparing mobilizations. These actions aim to generate social pressure and collective organization against a model that, they denounce, prioritizes speculation over the right to housing.
The union calls on civil society, social organizations, collectives, and unions to join the demonstration on June 27th, viewing it as a collective response to defend the right to inhabit the territory and to open a real debate on the housing model needed for the islands.
