Dr. Óscar Celada, the medical doctor for the Spanish national football team, has expressed his optimism and the team's excitement for the upcoming World Cup. "We have a wonderful memory of the star we have on our jersey and we want another one," he stated, while acknowledging the tournament's difficulty.
Celada emphasized the importance of assessing the players' fitness levels after an intense season. "Now we need to adjust how all the players are arriving after such an intense season, packed with matches and competitions," he noted. The priority is to ensure they arrive in the best possible condition to bring joy to the country.
Recalling the achievement of the first star, where players like Iniesta, Cesc, and Torres arrived with physical issues, the doctor is hopeful that the current situation can be replicated. "Hopefully, we can repeat it, because it's also true that we have players who are currently arriving very tight, but they have time to recover," he pointed out.
Regarding concerns about the recovery of Nico Williams and Lamine Yamal, Celada assured that they are in constant communication with their clubs' medical staff. "We are confident they will recover in due time and with guarantees," he stated, adding that the task is to get them fit to compete as soon as possible so that the coach, Luis de la Fuente, can make the final decision.
The doctor also expressed regret over Fermín's injury, calling it a "shame" as he "was very excited." "He had a fracture of the fifth metatarsal in his foot, which even required surgery," he explained, wishing him a speedy recovery and noting that "when there is an injury, there is also an opportunity for another," referring to the potential inclusion of Gavi.
Celada described Luis de la Fuente's squad selection as "fantastic," highlighting the year-round player monitoring. "We all have a selector within us, but Luis's call-up seems fantastic to me," he concluded.
Finally, regarding Spain's chances in the World Cup, Celada acknowledged that "everyone considers us favorites, and we do too," but warned of the strength of other teams such as France, Portugal, Brazil, Argentina, and Germany, among others.
