The Cabildo of Tenerife and representatives from the renewable energy sector have agreed to promote a joint working plan to accelerate the island's energy transition, addressing challenges such as the electrical grid, storage, and administrative procedures.

The island of Tenerife is preparing to accelerate the implementation of clean energy and move towards a more efficient, secure, and sustainable energy model. The Technological Institute of Renewable Energies (ITER), under the Cabildo of Tenerife, actively participated in a coordination meeting promoted by the island corporation with the renewable energy sector.
The main objective of this initiative is to define a joint working plan to overcome the obstacles that currently hinder the development of new energy projects on the island. The meeting was chaired by the president of the Cabildo of Tenerife, Rosa Dávila, and included the presence of several island councilors, as well as representatives from the Canarian Association of Renewable Energies (ACER), the Spanish Photovoltaic Union (UNEF), and the Official College of Industrial Engineers.
During the meeting, a diagnosis of the current energy situation in Tenerife was carried out, identifying the main challenges to achieve the objectives set for 2030. Key issues discussed included the capacity of the electrical grid, the management of renewable energy spills, storage needs, streamlining administrative procedures, the territorial fit of projects, and the promotion of self-consumption and energy communities.
Proposals were also analyzed to increase energy sovereignty, ensure supply security, and facilitate an orderly implementation of renewable energies, always in compatibility with the island's territory. One of the ideas put forward was the development of a digital twin of Tenerife's electrical system, utilizing ITER's technological capabilities, to model the grid and optimize its planning.
Other lines of action include promoting agrivoltaics, utilizing public rooftops for self-consumption, developing energy communities, and promoting a distributed model of renewable generation. The creation of a stable coordination table between administrations and sector agents was also proposed to maintain continuous dialogue.
ITER's participation underscores its role as a key scientific and technological agent in the island's energy transformation, contributing its expertise in renewable energies, digitalization, and energy system modeling. The Cabildo of Tenerife thus reaffirms its commitment to an energy transition that combines decarbonization, supply security, innovation, and territorial protection.
