The Cabildo de Tenerife has organized a training day for the island's municipalities, aiming to enhance the management and protection of historical and cultural heritage, particularly in towns with fewer than 20,000 inhabitants.

The initiative, which brought together a hundred participants, seeks to strengthen the capacity of local councils to appropriately intervene in cultural legacy, an area that often raises technical and legal questions for local administrations.

"The conservation of historical heritage is a shared responsibility among all administrations, and local councils are the front line of action in defending Tenerife's cultural legacy."

José Miguel Ruano · Councillor for the Presidency of the Cabildo
For her part, Candelaria Padrón, Councillor for Citizen Attention and Quality of Services, explained that the main objective of this meeting is to provide municipalities with practical and useful training, tailored to their real needs. This will enable them to make decisions with greater confidence and optimize their administrative management in this crucial area.
The workshop focused on critical issues for local councils when dealing with cultural assets or resolving heritage-related files. Topics covered included the legal framework and protection instruments for assets not declared Assets of Cultural Interest (BIC) or cataloged, the regulation of historical sites without a special protection plan, the coordination between the Cabildo's sectoral authorization and municipal urban planning licenses, as well as the potential patrimonial liability of the Administration in this field.

"This type of meeting allows us to address complex but fundamental issues for public administrations to act rigorously and with an integrative vision."

Isabel de Esteban · Island Director of Historical Heritage
The island director of Historical Heritage, Isabel de Esteban, emphasized the importance of having specialized technical and legal knowledge to correctly face the challenges posed by cultural heritage protection. The in-person workshop, lasting five hours, included several presentations by experts in administrative law and urban planning.
