The Cabildo de Tenerife has released the findings of a volcanic simulation conducted last September in Garachico. The results, analyzed in conjunction with European evaluators from EU MODEX 2025, have helped identify both the weaknesses and strengths of the island's emergency system.
Among the main weaknesses, a clear problem in communications was noted. Emphasis is placed on the importance of not abandoning analog systems, such as radio or public address systems, as digital technology can fail during critical moments, as observed in previous data blackouts. This aspect is crucial to ensure that information reaches the entire population, including those without access to technology.
“"We need to bring citizens into the culture of prevention."
Another fundamental challenge is the active involvement of the population. It is considered vital for citizens to participate in emergency plans and know how to act, which has been identified as an essential pillar for managing future crises on the island.
On the positive side, coordination among various institutions has been described as "very positive," representing a strong point of the civil protection system in the Canary Islands. Furthermore, the civic behavior and involvement of the population during the drill were highly valued, which, along with institutional coordination, represents a significant advantage for confidently facing a potential volcanic eruption.
