The capital's City Council has advanced in complex works aimed at stopping historical leaks and modernizing the facilities of the building, which houses 27 Carnival groups and the San Gerardo Neighborhood Association.
The Councilor for Works and Infrastructure, Javier Rivero, explained that the exterior work, which faced difficulties due to the building's age and a rainy winter, is expected to be completed by the end of July.
The work has included the renovation of the potable water network, which is now individualized for each premises, and the repair of roofs and facades to combat humidity. New carpentry and protective methacrylate panels have been installed to prevent water ingress.
The goal is for the exterior of the market to be fully rehabilitated by September, when Carnival groups resume their intensive rehearsals. In parallel, the electrical installation is being modernized, centralizing meters and renewing the network.
The Council will continue with interior and common space improvements, but rules out comprehensive intervention in the premises before the next Carnival to avoid affecting the groups' activities. The municipal investment is close to 900,000 euros.
In addition to the technical works, the building's exterior will be visually transformed with a large mural dedicated to Esteban Reyes, a historic figure of the Santa Cruz Carnival, created by artist Eric Eyre. The artwork will also include references to the various Carnival groups.
