The secretary general of PSOE Canarias, Ángel Víctor Torres, argued this Saturday in Los Realejos, Tenerife, that progress in equality and the protection of women "make the difference" between progressive governments and those supported by the right and far-right. These statements were made during the fourth edition of the Belarmina Martínez Feminist School, organized by the Canarian socialists.
Torres asserted that the fight against sexist violence and equality policies must be an "absolute priority" for public administrations. He lamented the "clear differences" between the management of the previous Pacto de las Flores and that of the current Government formed by Coalición Canaria and the Partido Popular.
"Some governments have certain priorities and others have different ones," stated Torres, who also criticized the management of the Canarian Institute for Equality. He explained that of the 10 million euros that Canarias receives from Spain for the fight against gender violence, "barely five million are executed," preventing essential resources from reaching actions aimed at protecting women and equality policies.
The socialist leader described this situation as "absolutely unforgivable" and warned that losing funding in this area "weakens the support and protection network" against sexist violence. He contrasted the first measures promoted by the Government of Pedro Sánchez, such as the gender-equal parity law, with the first measure of the Canarian Executive, which was to "eliminate taxes for those receiving fortunes of 300,000 euros," thus evidencing, in his view, "the difference between a progressive government and a conservative one."
Torres concluded by reaffirming the commitment of PSOE Canarias to feminist and equality policies as "a way of understanding and defending social justice."
