The new headquarters, located in the Professor Agustín Arévalo Tower, has undergone several months of work and is conceived as a place for collaboration and co-creation for researchers, faculty, and interns. It features four rooms designed to foster idea exchange and project development.
The director of the IUEM, Carina González, highlighted during the inauguration that these facilities are the materialization of a long history of collective work. She emphasized the importance of those who promoted and led the institute over the years, mentioning figures such as Amparo Gómez, María Eugenia Monzón, María José Guerra, María Dolores Serrano, Margarita Ramos Quintana, and Inmaculada Perdomo Reyes.
This new space, which includes offices, meeting rooms, collaborative workspaces, and an area for podcast recording, aims to enhance the IUEM's presence both within and outside the university. The goal is to establish stronger links with public institutions and Canarian society in general. González also underscored the relevance of the debates addressed at the institute, such as gender-based violence, persistent inequalities, gaps in science and technology, the integration of a gender perspective in research, and Artificial Intelligence biases.
The rector of the University of La Laguna, Francisco García, present at the event, stressed that the inauguration represents progress in the effort to provide knowledge against misinformation and 'fake news'. He expressed the academic center's pride in having a leading institute like the IUEM, whose work highlights societal realities and demonstrates the university's research and knowledge generation capacity.
The inauguration also featured the presentation of murals designed by artist Carla Garrido, which adorn the new headquarters. The artist explained that the works visually represent the institute's values and lines of work, inviting viewers to reflect on the multiple stories and metaphors they contain, thus becoming a hallmark of the new space.
