The University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ULPGC) has unanimously approved the awarding of its Gold Medal to the University of La Laguna (ULL). This recognition coincides with the commemoration of the centenary of the ULL's contemporary era, which will be reached next year following its reopening in 1927.
The rector of the ULPGC, Lluís Serra, informed the Governing Council that the ULL, originally founded in 1792 and closed during various periods in the 19th century, is celebrating a century of uninterrupted activity serving the Canarian society. The rector of the ULL has invited Serra to be part of the honorary committee for this centenary.
Serra emphasized that the proposal to grant this highest recognition to the ULL comes at a "particularly significant moment of institutional brotherhood." He recalled the ULL's awarding of its Gold Medal to the ULPGC in 2025, an act that, according to Serra, demonstrated a relationship based on respect, collaboration, and a shared commitment to public service.
After acknowledging the ULL's history and its contribution to higher education and science in the Canary Islands, the Rector of the ULPGC requested the approval of the Gold Medal as a "solemn expression of the brotherhood between both institutions and the shared commitment to continue working, from the public university, for and within the Canary Islands."
In other news, Lluís Serra reported on a recent meeting with the Department of Universities of the Government of the Canary Islands. During this meeting, a first draft proposal for multi-year funding for the two public universities in the Canary Islands was presented. This document is currently being carefully reviewed by the management teams of both universities.
