The island institution has launched a comprehensive analysis in the area of Las Machuqueras, located in the municipality of Fuencaliente. The primary objective is to collect data that justifies the declaration of a wildlife emergency, a response to the critical situation faced by agricultural crops, particularly centenary grapevines, due to the action of wildlife, especially rabbits.
The decision to proceed with this technical study was solidified after confirming concerns about a situation described as “unsustainable,” which threatens the viability of a unique agricultural system on the island. Institutional representatives and specialized technical personnel are collaborating in a coordinated manner in this decision-making process.
“"It is essential to act quickly to find balanced solutions that protect biodiversity without compromising agricultural activity."
Among the strategies considered by experts to mitigate damage are the delimitation of specific action areas to focus control efforts, the implementation of combat methods based on territorial knowledge and environmental regulations, and the installation of perimeter fences as physical protection for the most vulnerable crops.
“"The abandonment of these centenary vineyards would not only mean an economic loss but also a loss of identity, landscape, and agrobiodiversity in an environment integrated into the Teneguía Volcanoes Natural Monument."
Collaboration between administrations and the agricultural sector is considered key to implementing effective measures adapted to the reality of Las Machuqueras. The ultimate goal is to ensure the continuity of an activity that combines nature, culture, and economy in one of Canarias' most distinctive landscapes.
