The mayor of El Paso, Eloy Martín, has announced that 2027 will mark the Centenary of the Hermitage of El Pino, coinciding with the Triennial Fiestas of the Bajada de la Virgen. The proposal aims to highlight the historical, heritage, and sentimental significance of this enclave, deeply linked to the devotion of the people of La Palma.
Under the slogan ‘1927-2027. A Hermitage Built by a People’, the commemoration will emphasize the collective nature of its origin. According to the mayor, the hermitage was born from the unity and effort of the community, from a popular mobilization that organized and raised funds to realize a temple that remains part of their lives a century later.
Martín will present to the Corporation's Plenary, at the end of September, the proposal to declare 2027 as the Year of the Centenary. The objective is to promote a commemorative program that recognizes the origin of the enclave and the collective effort, following the example of unity and positioning the celebration at the level of its significance for El Paso and La Palma.
The participation of associations, collectives, and the municipality's social fabric will be fundamental in shaping this celebration. Efforts will also be made to recover documents, graphic material, and testimonies that help preserve and transmit the memory of those who made its construction possible.
The Pino de la Virgen and the Hermitage of Nuestra Señora del Pino are among the most valuable heritage sites in El Paso. Since 2014, the enclave has been declared a Site of Cultural Interest, with the category of Historic Site, in recognition of its historical, scientific, and cultural values.
