The socialists recall the importance of the historic center of Los Llanos as one of the most valuable urban ensembles in La Palma, a space that preserves traditional buildings, stately homes, and architectural elements defining the collective identity of the municipality.
They point out that numerous recent interventions have deteriorated the historical image, with the replacement of traditional woodwork with aluminum, alterations to facades, and renovations that have distorted the heritage value of some properties.
The socialists remember that in 2021, the Directorate General of Cultural Heritage of the Government of the Canary Islands promoted a study for the potential declaration of the town center as an Asset of Cultural Interest (BIC), an initiative that never materialized.
Currently, protection relies on a catalog of protected properties and favorable reports from the Insular Commission of Historical Heritage, an instrument they consider useful but insufficient for current conservation and enhancement challenges.
From the PSOE, they recall that tools exist such as updating the municipal catalog or processing more ambitious protection figures, like the BIC declaration as a Historic Ensemble.
“What the City Council cannot do is remain immobile,” state the socialists, criticizing that after three years of the legislature, “we are exactly at the same point” regarding the promised measures to protect historical heritage.
The Socialist Group believes that protecting the historic center is an investment in identity, urban quality, and economic development, as well-preserved historic centers generate cultural activity, strengthen local commerce, and increase tourism appeal.
Therefore, they request the City Council to present a clear roadmap, update existing protection instruments, and resume necessary initiatives to ensure the conservation of this heritage value for future generations.
