The Guía Sports Complex has begun to transform its image with the demolition of the municipal swimming pool grandstand. This action, described by mayor Alfredo Gonçalves as "a dream for the municipality," is the indispensable first step towards the construction of the future complex.
Guía, historically known for its sports facilities, was facing an obsolete complex. The modernization responds to public demand and will allow for the renovation of the municipal pools, a historic claim. The mayor, who has dreamed of this project since 2020, has highlighted its importance in meeting the needs of the residents of Guía.
The demolition, funded by the First Vice Presidency of the Cabildo of Gran Canaria with 279,143.40 euros, is progressing well and is expected to be completed in the second half of August. The site visit included, in addition to the mayor and Vice President and Councilor Augusto Hidalgo, councilors José Manuel Santana, Ruth Martín, and Julián Melián, along with the project director, Carlos Cabrera.
Augusto Hidalgo emphasized the potential of the future Sports Complex, which could be "the envy of Northern Gran Canaria." The demolished grandstand, disused and deteriorated, occupied an area of 626.98 square meters. The next phase will involve the refurbishment of the 50-meter outdoor pool, with a budget of 220,560 euros and a six-month execution period.
The project includes the construction of a new multi-purpose building where the grandstand was located. The works for the basement of the west and south wings, funded with three million euros from the Cabildo's Additional Investment Plan for Municipalities (PAI), will be put out to tender soon. In the future, it is planned to complete the remaining floors and air-condition the outdoor pool. The new building will house a gym in the basement, a playroom and administration services on the first floor, and a cafeteria or restaurant on the third floor, with views of the town of Guía.
This ambitious project aims to transform an emblematic space with a historic deficit into a state-of-the-art, sustainable, and accessible public facility for all residents of Guía.
