The General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) will impose fines of 80 euros on pedestrians who cross at designated crosswalks while distracted by their mobile phones, a practice that reduces their reaction time and endangers their safety.

The General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) has increased surveillance on pedestrians in the islands, reminding them that using a mobile phone while crossing the road, even at zebra crossings, can result in fines of 80 euros. Traffic regulations apply not only to drivers but also to pedestrians, who must act responsibly.
Although pedestrians have priority at designated crosswalks, distraction from mobile phones significantly reduces their reaction time to approaching vehicles. According to DGT data, 32% of pedestrians admit to frequently using their mobile phones while walking, and a concerning 20% do so when crossing zebra crossings.
The consequences of this distraction include reduced vision, a diminished ability to detect vehicles, and a longer reaction time to danger. The DGT emphasizes the importance of maintaining attention to prevent accidents, especially considering that pedestrians are among the most vulnerable road users.

"32% of pedestrians admit that they always or frequently use their mobile phone while walking. But what is worrying is that 20% say they always or frequently use their mobile phone when crossing a zebra crossing and 22% admit to doing so sometimes."

Traffic regulations remind us that pedestrians, motorists, motorcyclists, and users of Personal Mobility Devices (PMDs) share the road space. Therefore, exercising extreme caution and avoiding distractions is essential to ensure everyone's safety and reduce the incidence of pedestrian accidents.
