The La Orotava City Council has promoted a new ordinance to regulate manure disposal, with the objective of eradicating recurrent odor problems and environmental nuisances in various areas of the municipality.

The new regulation introduces clearer and stricter requirements for these practices, seeking a balance between primary sector activity and citizen coexistence. Mayor Francisco Linares highlighted the importance of adjusting procedures to avoid neighbor complaints related to odors, ensuring that the fertilizers necessary for agriculture are used without harming the population, especially in areas near urban centers.
Narciso Pérez, Councilor for Planning and Environment, detailed the key technical aspects. One of the main novelties will be the mandatory submission of a prior notification to the council before carrying out any disposal on a specific farm. This measure will facilitate supervision and control efforts by the Local Police and municipal technicians.
The ordinance will place special emphasis on manure of livestock origin, such as poultry (chicken manure) and pig manure, which generate a greater olfactory impact. The stacking of these materials will be strictly prohibited, and they will be required to be previously treated (fermented and dry).
Another measure for citizen protection will prohibit the disposal of organic fertilizer during periods of pre-alert or alert for wind or high temperatures declared by the Government of the Canary Islands, aiming to mitigate odor dispersion and protect public health.
The administrative processing of the ordinance will begin this July, with the expectation that it will come into effect before the end of the year, thus providing an effective, firm, and consensual response to a historical demand from the residents of La Orotava.
