The Municipal Consumer Information Office (OMIC) of La Orotava has initiated its summer campaign focused on citizen awareness regarding the importance of protecting the skin from the harmful effects of the sun.

Under the slogan “This summer, your skin doesn't forget, protect yourself!”, the municipal service provides practical recommendations for enjoying the sun safely. The initiative includes the creation of informative posters and brochures detailing how to choose a suitable sunscreen and essential guidelines for preventing damage from ultraviolet radiation. As part of the campaign, beach bags featuring the slogan are being distributed to help carry sunscreen products.
The educational materials outline six key tips for selecting sunscreens. It is recommended to opt for broad-spectrum products (UVA and UVB), verifying the UVA symbol or PA+ system on the packaging. Furthermore, a minimum Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of 30 is advised, preferably 50 or higher during summer, to reduce cumulative skin damage.
The importance of choosing water-resistant products is highlighted for use at the beach, pool, or during sports activities, reminding users that they should be reapplied after swimming or intense sweating. The campaign also emphasizes the need to adapt sunscreen to skin type: light, oil-free formulas for oily skin, moisturizing for dry skin, and mineral filters for sensitive or atopic skin. It is recalled that the best sunscreen is one that is used consistently and correctly, and users are urged to check the expiration date and product condition.
The effectiveness of sunscreen depends on its correct application, including using a sufficient amount and reapplying every two hours, as well as after swimming or heavy sweating. The mayor of La Orotava, Francisco Linares, recalled that the OMIC's function is to inform and prevent risks to consumer well-being and safety, which is particularly relevant in summer due to increased sun exposure.
The delegate councilor for Consumption, Darío Afonso, highlighted that the OMIC safeguards consumer interests and serves as a reference for information and advice. Sun protection is presented as a health issue to prevent burns, skin spots, premature aging, and reduce the risk of cumulative damage.
The OMIC of La Orotava handled 5,456 inquiries last year, processing 345 claims, of which 93.04% were resolved. The daily average is 22 inquiries, with a preference for direct interaction. 65% of claims were resolved through friendly mediation. The sectors with the most complaints are telephony (24.93%), travel (17.97%), energy (12.17%), automotive (10.14%), and appliances (8.70%).
The Municipal Consumer Information Office is located at León street, number 9, next to the Casa de la Juventud. It is a free service provided by the La Orotava City Council, open Monday to Thursday from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM. Appointments can be booked via the municipal website or by contacting 922 32 44 44 (extensions 2216 and 2220) or via email at omic@villadelaorotava.org.
