Since last Monday, the Ministry of Education has been hosting the Good Practices Conference of the Viera Project: the challenge of learning by reading. This event gathers a large group of education professionals with the aim of exchanging experiences and strengthening collaborative work around promoting reading.
The meeting seeks to reflect on innovative methodologies and improve students' linguistic communication skills. As reported by the department in a statement, these conferences are a crucial space for centers participating in the Viera Project, an initiative driven by the General Directorate of Curriculum Planning, Inclusion, and Innovation.
Through various presentations, round tables, and showcases, attendees explore practices related to reading for learning, media literacy, reading itineraries, reading conversation, and co-teaching as an educational tool. Among the highlighted interventions, shared teaching was discussed, explaining the connections between the Viera Project and the EsTEla program, focused on facilitating students' educational transition between different stages and preventing absenteeism and early school leaving.
The conferences began on Monday at IES La Laboral in San Cristóbal de La Laguna, in Tenerife, and will continue on May 19 at the Faculty of Philology of the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. To ensure the participation of teachers from all islands, the sessions are also streamed online.
This initiative, funded by the Ministry of Education, impacted 143 educational centers and over 43,000 students in its first year. It accounted for a total of 1,067 weekly teaching hours dedicated to methodological support and the implementation of reading practices for learning in classrooms. Furthermore, the project includes reading support actions specifically aimed at vulnerable students, thereby reinforcing equal opportunities and improving literacy in the Canary Islands. The Viera Project is currently accepting applications for the 2026-27 academic year, following the great reception and demand it received in its first edition.
