The Plaza de Santa Ana in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria buzzed with chess activity this Saturday during the third edition of the simultaneous event, part of the Founding Festivals.

The City Council of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, through the Municipal Institute for the Promotion of Physical Activity and Sport (IMD) and in collaboration with the Island Chess Federation, organized the chess simultaneous event. This initiative is part of the commemorative activities for the city's 548th Founding Festivals, aiming to bring the sport closer to citizens in an emblematic historical setting.
The event, revived in 2024 after more than thirty years without being held, brought together approximately 200 participants of various ages. Among those present were the mayor of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Carolina Darias, along with the Councilor for Sports and Youth, Carla Campoamor; the Councilor for Security, Coexistence, and Culture, Josué Íñiguez; and the president of the Island Chess Federation of Gran Canaria, Ciriaco Almeida.

"I thank the collaboration of the Island Chess Federation of Gran Canaria so that, for the third consecutive year, this chess simultaneous event is part of the activities for the city's 548th founding anniversary, bringing this sport closer to the citizens and contributing to the success of festivals that fill the city with life."

The simultaneous event allowed attendees to enjoy rapid games in the Plaza de Santa Ana, reinforcing its open, participatory, and intergenerational character within the sports programming of the Founding Festivals.
The IMD of the City Council continues to promote chess through the Municipal Sports Schools, with a particular focus on engaging young enthusiasts.
The sports program for the Founding Festivals also included the Canarian Latin Sailing Contest in the bay of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
