The Official State Gazette (BOE) has published a Royal Decree enabling certain Canary Islands workers in high-wear professions to access early retirement without suffering pension reductions.

This measure represents a significant change in Social Security regulations, eliminating the reducing coefficients that traditionally penalized those who retired before the legal age. Now, instead of an economic reduction, a reduction in the retirement age is allowed for specific groups, guaranteeing the full payment of the pension corresponding to the years contributed.
The legislation, approved in 2025, is designed for professions with particularly harsh working conditions, where continuing working life until the ordinary age is considered complex or dangerous. This includes jobs with high physical demands, exposure to risks, or toxic and unhealthy environments. Groups such as miners, firefighters, police officers, and sea workers already had similar benefits.
The novelty of the decree is its opening to new sectors that are currently requesting inclusion, such as transporters, construction workers, chambermaids (known as kellys), healthcare and care personnel, and heavy industry employees. To access this advantage, sectors must demonstrate, with data, that their activity involves greater wear and tear than average.
General requirements to benefit from this early retirement include a minimum access age of 52 years, having worked a minimum of 15 years in the profession, and agreeing to an additional contribution while active. It is important to note that the application is not individual; it must be initiated by unions or sector associations, who will present evidence of accident rates, sick leave, and physical workload for approval.
