The Government Delegation in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria hosted a crucial meeting this Wednesday to discuss strategies for managing the flow of people during the pontiff's arrival. Anselmo Pestana, delegate of the Autonomous Government, and José Mazuelos, bishop of the Diocese of Canarias, emphasized key measures such as suspending academic activities, encouraging remote work in the private sector, and prioritizing public transport.
Pestana reported on ongoing discussions with the Department of Education to reschedule school events planned for June 11. Additionally, contacts are being made with private companies to promote teleworking and reduce employee commutes. For access to the Siete Palmas area, where the main event with the Pope will take place, a significant reinforcement of public transport and restrictions on private vehicle traffic are anticipated.
“"It is planned to reinforce public transport and close access to personal vehicles to the Siete Palmas area, where the multitudinous event presided over by the pontiff is scheduled."
Bishop Mazuelos noted that nearly 1,000 volunteers are already assisting the Diocese in organizing the papal events. For the large-scale gathering, the use of the stadium annex and the Gran Canaria Arena is being considered, with approximately 60,000 available spots to be managed through prior registration. Furthermore, screens will be set up outside for those unable to enter the venue to follow the event.
