The city of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria vibrated on the night of Friday, May 29th, with the celebration of the eve of Canary Islands Day. Don Benito square, in the Schamann neighborhood, hosted nearly a thousand attendees at the third grand Taifas Dance, an event that has established itself as a meeting point for Canarian culture.
The initiative, promoted by the Las Palmas de Gran Canaria City Council in collaboration with the Canarian Institute of Traditions, recreated a festive and family-friendly atmosphere. Hundreds of citizens, including the mayor, Carolina Darias, the Councilor for Culture, Josué Íñiguez, and other members of the municipal corporation, actively participated in the commemoration of the archipelago's roots and traditions.
The evening was enlivened by performances from the dance groups of the Dragos y Laurel Cultural Association and the Juan Rodríguez Doreste Popular University. The music was provided by renowned groups such as Los Gofiones, Poliguanches, and the Parranda de Teror, who offered a repertoire of Canarian folklore.
The event was complemented by the installation of food stalls and lanterns, and shared tables, aiming to evoke the spirit of the taifa dances of yesteryear. The richness of Canarian cultural heritage was evident in the careful selection of traditional attire, the musical repertoire, the execution of traditional dances, and the tasting of local gastronomic products.
