The magistrate, with nearly 20 years of practice in Gran Canaria, has been backed by a broad majority of his peers, positioning him as a consensus figure in the Canarian judiciary. Born in Oviedo in 1975, Avello graduated in Law and entered the judicial career in 2001, serving in posts in Badajoz and Asturias before moving to Las Palmas de Gran Canaria in 2007.
Throughout his career, Avello has stood out for his teaching work and pioneering initiatives, such as the preliminary ruling referred to the Court of Justice of the European Union in 2021 concerning the civil procedure law and court costs in revolving card cases. This action allowed for the interpretation of the norm in favor of the consumer and led to the condemnation of a banking entity to pay costs, setting a precedent in Spain.
Since January 2022, he served as the exclusive dean of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, a position from which he coordinated the work of his colleagues and supervised the distribution of cases, gaining a deep insight into the systemic problems of justice in the archipelago.
His program for the TSJC presidency is structured around 13 axes, with high litigation rates as the main challenge. He proposes unifying judicial criteria, improving training to establish criteria, simplifying distribution rules, and promoting digitalization and artificial intelligence. He also aims to strengthen collaboration with bar associations to prevent trial postponements.
The new president faces the challenge of adapting to the new Courts of Instance, which became operational in 2025, and advocating for new judicial positions with the Ministry of Justice and the CGPJ to ensure adequate coverage for the workload in the Canary Islands.
