The Municipal Library Network of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria has launched the 'Bibliotecas Quitapenas' campaign, enabling users to settle their overdue book fines in exchange for donating non-perishable food items.

This initiative, promoted by LPA Bibliotecas in collaboration with the Food Bank of Las Palmas, aims to foster reading and social solidarity, while allowing users to immediately regain access to library services.
To participate, users must have returned all pending documents. Once their account is regularized, they can clear their penalties by donating basic non-perishable products such as gofio, oil, legumes, milk, sugar, coffee, or preserves.

A small gesture makes a difference.

The organization has reminded the public that the campaign focuses exclusively on collecting food and does not accept donations of clothing or household items. The initiative is open to all citizens, regardless of whether they have active fines or not.
Currently, library loan system penalties temporarily block access to both physical borrowing and digital platforms like eBiblio. Thanks to 'Bibliotecas Quitapenas', users can reactivate their library cards immediately while contributing to a charitable cause.
