The bid from Las Palmas de Gran Canaria to become the European Capital of Culture in 2031 has received a favorable evaluation from the jury, highlighting its focus on awareness and talent development.

The jury's report, released this week by the Ministry of Culture, acknowledges the innovative nature of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria's proposal, titled “Rebellion of Geography.” This initiative aims to use culture as a tool to address European challenges, emphasizing island consciousness as a cultural force with global relevance.
The document includes ten essential recommendations that the city must integrate into its new proposal, to be submitted in December. Among these suggestions, it stresses the need to “strengthen the dialogue between local cultural heritage and contemporary artistic practices, further developing the relationship between tradition and innovation in the program and presenting a detailed logistical and financial model.”

The panel positively values the emphasis placed on cultural citizenship, awareness, talent development and capacity building, as well as alignment with broader municipal and regional strategies and international policy references. Likewise, it positively values that citizen participation is presented as a methodological approach that underpins the candidacy.

The candidacy has been well-received by the panel of European Union experts, who have recommended its inclusion on the shortlist for the selection process. The mayor of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Carolina Darias, has expressed her gratitude to the jury for their attention and work, as well as to the Ministry of Culture for organizing the activity.
